cyril-Huze-fast-news74th Sturgis Rally. Felony Drug Arrests Up. Money Seized Up. Fatalities Down. The South Dakota Highway Patrol says it made 244 DUI arrests during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. 252 people were arrested for misdemeanor drug offenses and 90 for felony drug offenses. Authorities seized more than $25,000 in cash during the annual event. The Patrol says a total of DUI arrests were down compared to the rally in 2013, but the amount of money seized almost doubled from last year. The Department of Public Safety says 68 crashes that resulted in injuries, four of them fatal, were reported during the week. The number of fatalities is down by 2 compared to 2013.

U.S. Safety Regulators Investigating Reports Of Fires In Can-Am Spyder Three-Wheeled Motorcycles. The probe covers about 52,000 motorcycles made by Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. of Canada from the 2008 through 2014 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that the 3 recent fires with no injury appear to be unrelated to three previous recalls of the motorcycles. The three recalls happened in 2012 and 2013, and all involved the risk of fires. Last year, the company recalled about 8,200 Spyders because brake fluid leaks could cause fires. In 2012 it recalled about 34,000 because fuel vapors could leak due to an ill-fitting gas cap. It also recalled 9,600 because fuel vapors could exit a vent hose in the engine compartment.

Willie G. Davidson to be Honored As Legend At AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends are existing members of the Hall of Fame whose lifetime accomplishments are showcased as part of the annual induction ceremony of new Hall of Famers. “Few motorcycle designers have contributed more to the modern motorcycle landscape than Willie G. Davidson,” said Ken Ford, a member of the Hall of Fame executive committee and treasurer of the AMA board of directors. “Willie G.’s name is synonymous with style, freedom and the American-made motorcycle. We’re very excited to recognize him as an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend at this year’s induction ceremony.”

Davidson, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in graphic arts and then attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, then joined the design department at Harley-Davidson in 1963. Among his earliest projects was the FX Super Glide. The Super Glide was one of Harley-Davidson’s factory customs, a production motorcycle with styling cues that reflected the custom motorcycles being built in shops across the country at the time. Today, the Super Glide is considered to be a milestone in the history of Harley-Davidson. The original FX led to many variations that would produce some of the company’s best-selling machines. He was one of the 13 company executives who raised the funds to buy Harley-Davidson back from conglomerate AMF in the 1980s. As such, he was crucial in laying the foundation for Harley-Davidson to become one of the most successful, profitable and fastest-growing corporations in the United States over the next three decades. Morgan 3 Wheeler Limited Is Recalling 235 model year 2012-2014. The recalled motorcycles were manufactured without a lamp that illuminates only when the brake fluid level is low. Without a warning that the motorcycle has low brake fluid and that the brakes may fail as a result, there is an increased risk of a crash. Morgan will notify owners, and dealers will install the warning lamp free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may Morgan’s US Agent at 505-570-1845.

    I guess the problems with the Spyder and Morgan are good news for Polaris and their new Slingshot…
