Street Tracker

Free1Free2Free3Free4During the last 3 years, Spain’s economy has been in rapid economic decline with today’s unemployment rate still standing at 27% (the second highest in the European Union after Greece.) You must admire those who in this country are still able to make a living customizing motorcycles working on anything a client may bring to the shop and for whatever budget is available.

Free5Free6In this case, a Kawasaki KZ400 born in 1974,  the first year this model hit the showrooms, introducing the oem practice of incorporating the nominal engine size in the model code name. Launched as a commuter bike 39 years ago the KZ400 is still used by many around the world as a light, economical and reliable transportation to from work and may one day be considered as a Classic, very representative of this era.

Free7Free8Original Kawasaki KZ400 designer Ben Inamura had probably never imagined that almost 40 years later, a Spaniard like Marcos Vazquez at would turn his creation into a modern Street Tracker. A complete restoration and modification job starting with full disassembly, cleaning and sanding of all parts, rebuilding and polishing of the engine, cutting and fabrication of a new round subframe, simplification and relocation of all electrical and ignition hidden under the seat. For new custom parts, new fabricated rear fender, speedo, bars, Biltwell Kung-Fu grips,  turn signals, Cross foot pegs, wrapped exhaust with megatone baffles, etc. A simple and classic paint job keeps the new KZ400 rooted in the 70’s.

Nice. Tastefully executed. Builder resisted the urge to go overboard everywhere and anywhere resulting in a very well balanced design. I think this kind of understated design theory usually requires the most judicious application of thought, skill and effort. True art, but true to its medium.
