Asumati Street Tracker

Writing about custom bikes of fellow builders teaches me a lot of things that have apparently nothing to do with motorcycles. So, I wondered, like you are, what is the story behind the name of this new creation? It was built by Jim Giuffra at(and of course his crew of girls) for the Jackson Rancheria Casino Hotel. And this establishment wanted the bike to be a tribute to the Native Americans Miwok tribe (also spelled Mi-wuk) from Northern California. And I learned that there is a tale of young brave of the tribe who fought a long and furious struggle with a grizzly bear, finally killing the huge animal with a tree limb. His accomplishment was so remarkable that his tribe called him Chief Yo Semitee (for a full grown grizzly) and this name was passed to his children and eventually to the entire tribe and even the valley they lived in. Like most Native Americans, the Miwuks had no written language until they came into with white men. And when they tried to write down the Indians spoke, they gave to the word Yo Semitee different spelling – usuimati, uzumati, oo-soo-ma-te, and the more familiar yosemite, but the Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians prefers to use Asumati…

Your questions about the name Asumeti being answered… Jim Giuffra, the most well known builder for crossing over from metric to v-twin creations and back to metric custom bikes, explained to me that he wanted this Honda VT750ST creation to look and behave like a Street Tracker, meaning keeping emphasis on very good handling. As usual the crew of AFT girls did a lot of the build, Jim stating a percentage around 70% of total labor time. For example, Nalani – only 18 years old – pounded out the side covers, sub fender & removable tail section. As a side story, to reward all his AFT girls who have worked on this project he send them all in February to builders Cole Foster & Greg Westbury where they will follow a class in metal shaping.

It is important to mention that Asumati is a fully street legal motorcycle (horn included!) weighting only 420 pounds wet. The bike is a convertible with a removable tail section if you want to have a passenger or ride solo. A Paugho tank was cut, widened, tunneled & reshaped. If you are looking for the radiator, yes it’s now relocated under the seat. Motor is a naked engine design that AFT Customs pioneered with a VT750 performance kit, top end narrowed 2 inch. high compression pistons & cams and custom exhaust. The Race tech shocks were custom made specifically for this bike. The Yamaha R1 front end uses a custom set of trees & risers sourced from Alan Kraus of Kraus Motor Co. Braking via Beringer hand controls and calipers. Moto gadget instruments. Grip Ace digital switches inside grips & turn signals. License plat rotates from vertical to horizontal. Bars are 1 3/8″ by Easton. Leather by Duane Ballard.     Metric or domestic, it doesn’t matter, this bike is a true custom motorcycle that represent Jim’s dynamic creativity while watching over the female builders/models who are the ones who actually do the Fabricating and wrenching on this custom motorcycle. i appreciate something different and so does the up and coming generations.Nice custom bike Jim.

    There is a small inner rear fender bolted to the swing arm & as the artical states there is a removable rear fender / seat. Dinky – thanks for your educated kind remarks on the pipe. That’s a perfect name for someone who does’t feel that they measure up & has to tear down others work to make themselves feel important.

    Another nice build by Jim and the girls with a great story to boot.

    Jim has chosen the Metric route which is more difficult in my views with near zero aftermarket to just bolt on. He has to create everything and that makes it harder and those engines are not as sculptural as a domestic V-Twin and it’s much harder to make them stand out. So congrats to AFT Customs.

    That is the best looking chopped metric bike I have ever seen…I own and ride HDs but I’d ride that in a heart beat..

    There is not that I am aware of a lot of after market performance parts for the Metric v-twins. The stock 750 metric v-twins are pretty anemic.

    Any bike without a rear fender seems dangerous. I can’t help but think what would happen if you hit an unexpected pothole or got rear-ended. That back yire would try to force your ass between the tire and the frame.

    Dinky… would love to see what you build and or ride. Props to Jim for going the metric route, like it has been said the HD world is full of products ready to bolt on. Jim consistently builds bikes that win awards and get noticed by people with an appreciation for the moving metal art medium. Hot rods were born out of necessity, take what you have and improve upon it. Great work to Jim and his minions (tripe threat: smart, talented, & beautiful) ……….

    To clarify: the bike looks great but if it is not safe to ride I don’t care how good it looks. I don’t like bikes with no front brakes either, they might look good but but i can’t overlook the obvious.

    Using the power plant from an Indian would have been a fitting thematic touch.

    I’m impressed by the engineering involved in hiding the radiator, that would not have been easy. Wonder how well it cools now though? Best looking Honda VT750 I’ve seen. Honda could have taken a leaf out of this book before they came out with the Fury.

    SEYMOUR – You positioned yourself at the top of the scum pile on this site for calling those girls whores. You sound like a coward that beats women . This site won’t let me say what I really think of you.

    Jack Flack – the artical states that there is a removable seat/tail section so the bike can be ridden either way. Cyril didn’t print a picture of it. You won’t slide off the seat if your holding on to the handle bars.

    Sheridan – The radiator works excellant under the seat. Has plenty of air flow, fan, thermostat, and holds more fluid than stock because of extra length of hoses. We’ve been doing this for 7 years now with no problems.

    ive ssen this bike in person and gotta say the details you dont see in these pics are what make this bike so cool. as far as the girls, they are not just some gimmick. I talked with both Jim and shelby for an hour at the amd and shelby was very knowledgable and explained that Jim spends lots of time teaching them the way to do things but they actualy do the work

    Jim has been showing bikes at our Sacramento show for many years and every year he comes up with top of the line original builds. Guys like Jim are what keep the imigination current in this industry. Great Build-Great Bike-Great Shop and a Gentleman to boot. Stay on track Jim you are in a good groove.

    @ little bear, of course it has a front brake, and I love the rotor. I was just stating something else I don’t like on custom bikes. @ ATF Customs , congrats at building one of the absolute best looking Honda V-Twins ever! People like you are the lifeblood of our industry. The cookie cutter Harley shops which are all alike and all carry the same stuff are very boring (yea I ride a Harley). Modifing or customizing bikes are what make bike shops interesting and differant. When traveling I always try to look up and visit local bike shops.Don’t take my comments as me being a hater, but I’ve seen a bike ridden in the rain with a small rear fender and I’m glad it was’nt me. Keep up the good work ATF!
