Steve McQueen Husqvarna Is For Sale.

Following Bonhams’ highly successful inaugural motorcycle sale in Las Vegas earlier this month – where approximately 200 motorcycles brought buyers and sellers together from around the world for a sales total exceeding $2.5 million, the world’s leading auctioneers of motor vehicles is proud to announce its third annual auction at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering.
Hosted on May 14th at Quail Lodge in Carmel, California, Bonhams’ sale of “Exceptional Motorcycles & Related Memorabilia” will include what is understood to be the very motorcycle featured on the front cover of the August 1971 issue of Sports Illustrated being ridden by none other than “The King of Cool,” Steve McQueen.
The 1971 Husqvarna 400 was originally purchased from the Steve McQueen Estate Sale in 1984 at Harrah’s Auto Collection in Las Vegas. In addition to its title of former owner, authentic documentation and immortal association, the Swedish-made dirt bike – which son Chad McQueen reportedly said was his father’s favorite off-road brand – comes with a wooden trunk of accessories as owned by McQueen. Other McQueen ephemera will be offered at the sale including numerous racing trophies won by this legend of the silver screen. A call for consignments is being issued for the upcoming May auction where sellers can expect interest from clientele from around the globe. Sellers interested in consigning a motorcycle to this mid-May auction can call 415-391-4000 or e-mail [email protected]. (picture copyright Sports Illustrated)

James Dean didn’t live long enough to do anything much. More legend than life. Just my 2 cents.

As for Steve, he lived long enough to be seen in many movies and on many race tracks. He was an ambassador for our industry long before Jay Leno came along to add his support.

Steve loved his machines 2 wheel and 4 wheel and that picture sure isn’t PC! Of course neither were the times that pic was shot.

In my magazine collection I still have a November 1966 Popular Science (monthly, printed in the old 6 3/4″ x 9 1/4″ format) with Steve McQueen on the cover “on the bike he built for himself”. The article is titled on the cover as Motorcycles: What I Like in a Bike and How I Pick ‘Em. In the magazine the article is titled Motorcycles: What I Like in a Bike-and Why. Steve actually wrote the article and it is really a shoot out of six off-road/desert riding bikes, BSA Hornet, Norton Matisse, Triumph Bonneville TT Special, Honda 450, Greeves Challenger, and the Montesa La Cross. The comparisons are interesting but the bike he built for himself for this style of desert riding that he enjoyed the most was put together at the Ekins brothers (Bud and Dave) shop in the San Fernando valley. Steve used a Rickman-Matisse frame with the oil in frame feature, Cerriani forks with 7 1/2″ travel and a BSA fork-crown, a 650cc Triumph engine with Triumph gear box and fiberglass gas tank and fenders front and rear from “junk yard”.
AND for you Mustang fans there is also an article by Mario Andretti, a comparison of the new 1967 Mustangs, a Standard model vs. a GT model with 390 engine!

I met Steve McQueen’s last wife a month ago and asked her if she had retained any of his bikes or cars. She said she had not even one. Not even one !
